How My Art Style Changes Over the Years

Hello everyone, This is Lane and in this week’s article, I will be showing you the evolution of my art style. I have never really had a consistent art style, it’s constantly changing and I’m used to the changes, the process of changing my art style hurts, it involves having no motivation in drawing whereas anytime I picked up a pencil the drawing I created will turn out bland, tasteless, and boring. That’s when I know I’m going through a style change, and it took a couple of weeks of not drawing to finally find the perfect new art style that I’m comfortable with. Here are some of my old drawings to show you some of my previous art style changes.

1. The Faux-Beginning (2018)

This is the oldest drawings of mine that I found, and I only got it because it’s from a sketchbook, I’ve only started drawing in sketchbooks in 2018, I was in 4th grade of elementary school and it was a challenging time… I used to semi-hate drawing, I have a love-hate relationship with it because I was a lazy kid and drawing took so much effort and time for it to only turn out decent. And it won’t sell, as Melanie Martinez once said “Art don’t sell, unless you f**ked every authority.”

2. The Experimental Phase (2021)

I didn’t find any drawings from 2019 and 2020, I think I mostly drew on copy papers on those years and it just got scattered away somewhere, but I remember painting lots of watercolor pieces on those tearable watercolor paper sketchbook so I lost most of it… But I think in 2021 I’ve experimented with lots of styles with colored pencils (e.g. the drawing of that strawberry piece), watercolor (for example, that Raiden Shogun drawing), and with that semi-charcoal pencils (e.g. those drawings of a goth-like buildings/castles).

3. The Art Style Build-up (2022)

I didn’t found many drawings of this year, or at least not any that passed the test… I do have a lot of digital drawings that year but they’re below decent in my opinion. Even my 2018’s drawing of Dj Pon-3 is more eligible than my 2022 drawings… I noticed I did a lot of digital drawing but it’s all for stickers, since I used to sell stickers on Etsy in 2022. But I drew lots of chibi heads, like the ones on the right, and those are so fun to draw, I used to draw them all the time when I’m bored, I have these sticky notes and notepads that I carry on at all times and a set of mechanical pencil and its eraser.

4. The Most Consistent Year (2023)

I did a lot of sketching of characters and original characters, in fact I made a whole school and the students are all my OC, and for your information it’s an all-girls school since I can’t draw males… But I think did quite some extreme switch-ups that year because I’m constantly changing an element of my drawing, for example; First, I drew a nose in a ‘v’ shape and I switch it up to only drawing the shadow part of the nose, then I switch it up again into drawing a human-like nose with a full-on nostrils.

5. The Most Variable One (Early 2024)

This year I’ve tried a couple other new mediums, I tried alcohol-based markers and I think I like it, although I have troubles blending the colors it’s a fun medium to color with especially since you can add details with water-based markers and colored pencils. And I have this period of time where I like to make these colorful pages and add some Pierce The Veil and My Chemical Romance lyrics, the drawings tells something. I made a whole lore about the different colored eyes, and the black eye rules the whole galaxy and the solar system.
