Why I Prefer Analog Art

From the beginning, we all discovered drawing by picking up a pencil and starts making scribbles in a surface, that surface can be a paper, a wall, a bedsheet, etc. And we've all been making those same scribbles since then, only now we call it “drawing.”

In the digital era, digital art came storming down on the art industry and it gave artists a brand new option on where to express their ideas and creativity. Although I agree digital drawing has a lot of advantages such as—no paper waste, you can make as many mistakes as you'd like and you don't waste any papers in the process, and you can easily edit, resize, and undo stuff. There's also a bunch of tools available to make drawing easier and more practical—I do think analog drawing is a much suitable media for me to draw with. Don't get me wrong digital artists, I have a drawing tablet and have been drawing digitally for about 3-4 years, but I have been doing analog drawing 5 years earlier than that, so it's safe to say I'm more comfortable with analog than digital art. Here are my top 5 reasons why I liked analog drawing more.

1. The Feel of a Paper and a Canvas

Not only paper and canvas, as there is so much more surfaces you can draw on such as tree chops, walls, metal, fabric, glass, skin, etc. you can paint on them, turn them into something new, be creative with it, and more.

2. How Easily You Can Combine Certain Mediums in a Piece

I like mixed-media art. I just want to start a piece with a pencil, sketch something out, and then continue it with alcohol-based markers, make dramatic shadows with water-based markers, and add some pop of colors with acrylic markers, and lastly add details with colored pencils. Or sometimes I want to sketch with gouache paint instead, or with watercolor or charcoal, who knows? Combining different types of medium can elevate your way of thinking about a piece, you can add fun elements to your art, make it less bland, and it's fun to do!

3. Each Medium is Unique

There are lots of art mediums that you can try in this world, not only on flat surfaces, for example you can make sculptures using air-dry clay, or you can make edible sculptures on cakes using fondant, or you can knit/crochet a cute plushie, and honestly there's so much more you can do in analog art.

4. The Traditional Way

You know how in analog art you can manually do things like mixing paint colors, create a new color by blending different pencil colors on different angles and stuff like that? That's what makes art fun as a kid because you get to experiment what color yellow and red makes, and what happens when you use a toothbrush to paint. I liked how art is a concept of illusion where if you try to replicate it without knowing the technique used, you're most likely to get different result, so you have to be creative with it!

5. Physical holdings

You can keep and treasure your drawings forever or even pass them down as a family heirloom because art is that valuable. As an artist who is also a beginner musician, I feel the same about both my drawings and my music, when I'm recording my music I feel sad that I cannot physically hold it, that's why I always turn them into CD’s and cassettes after mixing. The same thing applies to my drawings and paintings, sometimes when I draw digitally, I'm sad because I can only look at them in a screen. I know I can print them but they're not the same as when you draw it directly in the paper, when you draw something in a paper or paint something on a canvas, you can see little mistakes that you do and how you cover them up, and how one part of the paper is super thin because you make so many mistakes on that part that every time you erase it the paper erases itself too.

So that's some of my main reasons why I prefer analog art. Feel free to drop your thoughts below in the comments sections, let me know your perspective and share where you like to apply your artistic skills into. See you all next week!
