Scattered Postcards: Starting A Guerilla Art Project

    You may have noticed this from my previous blogs, but two things I like the most are art and activities to keep myself busy. Well, this particular thing is the right thing for me. I actually found out about Guerilla street art a couple of years ago (I believe), or maybe early/mid-2024. I've been wanting to try it for such a long time, and now I got a chance to, so I'm gonna take it.

There are many types of Guerilla street art, such as;

  1. Scattered postcards, which is the act of spreading around hand-drawn or printed art postcards and put it in between random pages of a book in a public library.
  2. Polaroids on telephone poles, putting polaroids, doodles, or poems on a random public telephone poles or trees.
  3. Hidden mini origamis, make little origami animals and organize it on a fruit shelf in the supermarket.
  4. Yarnbomb, there's a whole subculture of it, and it's about placing yarn on an entire tree or poles in public places.
  5. Sticky notes on random places, doodle or write some fun things on a sticky note and put it anywhere you'd like.
  6. Letter on a park bench, this is my personal favorite, it's the act where you could put random stuff inside an envelope (e.g. photos, old drawings, ribbons, etc.) and address it "for you" and leave it on a park bench.
And since there are a lot of options, I'm going to change the type of guerilla street art that I'm going to do every 2 weeks. I'm going to do each one of these stuff in my school except the yarn bomb thing, because it would cost me a lot just to yarn bomb a tree at my school.

And in this eventful week, I, Lane, am going to to scatter around some postcards on my school library. Hey, it might not be the city public library, but it's still "public" and I'm definitely going to put some cute postcards on there.

I have prepared 6 hand-drawn postcards for this week, and I have taken advantage of the fact that Valentine's day occurred this week. The 6 postcards that I've prepared are numbered, and I've put a little "context" in each and every one of them, by writing "guerilla art" with a search bar in the back of each postcards.

The first postcard is the first one that I did and it's a drawing of a missing poster with a tarantula on it. And a call-to-action that says "if found, contact *suicide prevention line number*." It's nothing serious, I just want a funny realization for the person who found it when they figured out it's a suicide prevention line. And I'm hoping they don't call the line for real, I hope they searched what the number meant on google, because that's what you should do when you find a random and strange number on the street. Do not call it, kids.

The second postcard is a "happy Valentine's day" postcard where the back of the postcard actually had an actual address and notes section you can write on. And I drew the spotify code to the song "Hello it's me" by Todd Rundgren in the front, just because I like the song so freakin' much. I hope someone who found this had someone to give it to. I don't mean any harm if they don't, I just want to make people feel happier than they were before.

The third postcard is a funny one... Atleast I, as the creator, thinks so. I folded up the postcard paper and draw a letter-like interface in the front and back. And on the inside, I drew discord from My Iittle Pony with a writing that said "Having a bad day?" beside it. That was drawn on the upper part. And in the lower part of the paper, I drew a spotify code for the song "Never gonna give you up" by Rick Astley with a writing that said "Hear a song!" above it. It was pure evil, I know. But I always laugh when I got rickrolled, especially in places I didn't expect to. Like from a postcard at a school library, for instance...

The fourth postcard is a drawing of a human, at last! But this has the highest level of exposabillity (it's not a real word), because if one of my drawing buddies at school found this, they would recognize my art style and report me for vandalism. So I hope this postcard didn't screw me up. It's a "photo booth" style of drawing where I drew 2 of my OCs (which I've never shared with anyone before, so it's cool) doing some cute poses with some photobooth accessories on.

The fifth & sixth postcards are the simplest of them all, they we're an interactive postcard, like an activity one. One of them is a blank canvas with a frame and a paint palette with some paints and a paintbrush on it saying "Create your own masterpiece!", indicating that the person who found it should draw some things in there. And the other one is an "X marks the spot" kind of thing, where I drew the map of our school and the person who found it can mark their favourite place at school or their class location in the map with an "X."

It's Friday, on Valentine's day, and I'm going to scatter these postcards on random books at the school library after school hour has ended, except for the "happy Valentine's day" card, because I want someone to find that soon, since it's the 14th of February today, so the person who found it can quickly give it to their loved ones before today ends.

Next week, I'm going to draw the postcards and give out new ones every day. For example, I'll draw the postcard for Monday in Sunday, the postcard for Tuesday in Monday, the postcard for Wednesday in Tuesday, and so on. And every 2 weeks I'm going to pick a different type of Guerilla street art to do.

What do you think I should draw for next week's postcards? Comment down below.
