Back in our Guerilla Street Art project, Lane here, I'm going to write a recap on this week's postcards report.
If you didn't tune in my last week's post, I started this Guerilla Street Art project, and it's about spreading around things like handmade postcards, Polaroids, sticky notes, origamis, and filled envelopes at school and the purpose is to make everyone's day happier, like finding easter eggs all over school.
And the rule is, I'm going to change the type of Guerilla Art that I'm going to do every 2 weeks, for example: this week and next week, I'm going to make Polaroids and spread them around school for 2 weeks. And in the next 2 weeks, I'm making origamis to put on flower pots, and so on.
Since I started last week by making 6 postcards (Monday to Saturday), so this week I'm continuing the postcard arc by making 6 of them for each and everyday to scatter in the school library.
The first postcard that I did this week is a "funny" one... It's a knock knock joke, and it goes something like this;
A: Knock knock.
B: who's there?
A: Panther.
B: Panther who?
A: Panth or no panth, I'm going thwimming!
Let that sink in... I'm worried that someone who found it didn't understand it. Because I understand everyone's humor isn't always the same. This knock knock joke is funny because it's unfunny. You laugh because it's ridiculous. But I'm afraid someone will definitely think it's corny and throw away the postcard.
But I'm willing to accept that, since I'm putting my art in public places, I have to learn to accept whatever happen to it. Take a graffiti artist for instance, real vandals or rebellious teenagers will definitely spray paint ugly things over their work, and the people who owns the property will definitely report them to the authority, despite how carefully created it is. You have to accept things like this when putting your art out there.
The second postcard that I did this week is another envelope letter-style postcard, which I'm addicted to do because it's so stylized and it can be easily slipped in between book pages. I wrote a heartfelt letter inside, grieving about the death of your beloved pet turtle: Tank. With the drawing of Tank the turtle, also known as Rainbow Dash's pet turtle.
I'm planning to make a whole series of pets in these postcards, like the one I did last week of "Tony, the tarantula." Or maybe I could make My Little Pony pets again, like "Angel, the rabbit" also known as Fluttershy's pet, and "Opal, the cat" which is Rarity's pet. Or why limit ourselves with My Little Pony pets? There's "Zoe Trent, the dog" from Littlest Pet Shop. And honestly many more. The Monster High girlies also have pets.
The third postcard is a real funny one, or at least for me. First, I'd like to add in a context so the funny part makes sense later. So I live in a country who don't consider English as a national language, and so I don't live in the US, in fact, farther and farther away from that. So, now that we got that out of the way, this postcard is another postcard style ones where there are a picture in the front and in the back you could address it to someone and write something on it, with a fake stamp and everything. In the front, I drew a US flag with a capitalized writing that said "God bless America." Ok, I personally have a GIF of an eagle flying in front of the US flag with a writing of the same thing. And I laugh every time I use it. So, I think it's funny because why would I, as a non-American, use that on a daily basis.
Other than that, texting "RAAAAAH" with full caps and bomb emojis, the US flag emoji, eagle emojis, and fire emojis always made me crack up. So I hope the person who found this postcard will find this funny, or at least made a weird look when they found it, because it's ridiculous as hell. Maybe I should stop making these "funny" postcards for the next ones.
The fourth postcard is a specific one. Only certain peoples notice the reference. In fact, emo people. It's another postcard-style with the picture of a plane crash in front and a space to write a message and address it to someone. Yes, the person who found this will be 'Sending Postcards From A Plane Crash (Wish You Were Here)'. If you still didn't get the reference, as I'm sure not everyone will do, it's a Fall Out Boy song, and it's one of my favorite song in 'Take This To Your Grave' album. Since we're here, you should check it out, if you haven't already.
But I like this postcard, because I want to share more song or band-related references in the future Guerilla Art project. Maybe in the envelope letter style? Where I had to put random stuff in an envelope and put it on a random bench at school. I could slip in one of my playlist, but I've had traumatic experience regarding my music taste. Let's just say my parents weren't a fan of it. But I'm not being myself in this scenario, I'm anonymous in this project, so I shall do whatever I want!
I got the Idea for the fifth postcard from my beloved sister, she's pretty helpful but not that helpful. It's a drawing of Tom (from talking Tom) and Angela (from talking Angela) going on a date to the movies with popcorns and stuff. The other side of the postcard shows a confession letter template. So the person who found this can address it to the person they like, and there's space for them to pass on their message. I like this one, it's comforting in my opinion. Just because Tom and Angela is my favorite couple when I was in 4th grade or so.
And lastly, the sixth postcard is an invitation to join the SSSSSS. It's a 'Series of Unfortunate Events' reference. I hope if the person who found this doesn't know what it meant, they'd google it. SSSSSS stands for Scientific Society Seeking to Soothe Stress and Suffering. It's an organization Count Olaf made up when he pretended to be Stefano in The Reptile Room, if I remembered correctly. Man, I really should stop making these 'funny' ones, even though it's not meant to be funny, if I saw this out in the wild I'd be flabbergasted.
So that's what I made for this week's postcard, and there's a big frickin' event at my school next week so I won't be continuing this project for about 2 weeks, but I'll be back on @10-15th March. For the next 2 weeks, I'm gonna write about other stuff. So stay tuned for the next blog!
