My Experience at the Student Orientation Event

Since a week after summer break, the scouts extracurricular club has been busy practicing our performance for the new student orientation event where the new freshmen will be introduced to our school. The new student orientation event is a 2-day event at school to welcome new freshmen. This year, every extracurricular club at school is required to do a performance/club introduction during the club showcase and are also required to make their club’s stand/booth where the new students could sign up to their club. And the scouts extracurricular club is determined to get 30 new members to sign up into their club, and that’s how our journey began.

The day before the event, we prepared props and decorations for our club stand/booth. Our stand was placed in between the journalism club and the basketball club. In our stand, we made a little “game” area where there’s a bowl full of ball styrofoams and folded pieces of paper that has different questions inside, and so people could answer whichever question they get, and if they answered it correctly, they’ll get a free snack to enjoy. There’s also a little exhibition table where we would display some scouts items like an aiming compass, semaphore flags, and other scout-related stuff. We also made a huge ship using some ropes and scout staffs, and the best thing is that up to 2 people could lay on top of ship and up to 4 people could sit in the ground part of the ship so it kind of became our resting area, we also decorated the ship with semaphore flags and the Scouts organization flag. Another essential thing to do is to display our club’s achievements in the shape of trophies, certificates, and medals that we’ve got throughout the years and some from a couple of years back, we displayed 8 trophies, 6 certificates, and 1 medal in total. And lastly, we hanged a bunch of polaroids of photos from our activities documentation and also photos of the current scouts members, with a little twist in the middle where we put our coach’s portrait flipped back and wrote “secret” on it, because our coach said it would made the freshmen curious and ended up joining, it’s a lame trick but we had no choice except following everything our coach suggested for the stand, other than the fact that we had no other ideas on how to make our stand looked more interesting, our coach claimed to have recruited 10 new scout member by himself when he’s still in a scout in middle school, so who are we to reject his ideas?

The new student orientation event started two days ago, precisely on Thursday, where it’s time for our club to perform. We did 2 performance for the freshmen to see, which is a scouts dance and a formation variation routine. I was nervous before I performed, and unfortunately made a couple of mistakes here and but I think I did my best, but I did notice that the field we were performing on is a little slippery, and I almost slipped during the dance routine. But so far, I only made 2 noticeable mistake. But once we finished performing, the club started to lose hope in getting the freshmen to sign up, because in our formation variation routine, I noticed at least one mistake made from each members performing during the last formation. And our lost of hope is turning into reality when the event came to an end and we had only recruited 7 new members. We need 23 more by the next day and it doesn’t look like there’s 23 other freshmen who wanted to sign up at the time.

The second day of the event is more hectic, because instead of finishing the event at 4 PM, the event ended at 12 PM instead, and we already knew that we couldn’t possibly get 23 more freshmen to sign up in that short amount of time. Starting from the beginning of the day, the freshmen had their own activities, making it hard for the scouts club and other extracurricular clubs to take in a new member, but at about 10 AM, the freshmen began to go into their own assigned classes for the event, so we went to a couple of classes to promote the club, and we’ve got 2 new members in the process. Some freshmen also went into our stand and filled the sign up form without any of our members persuading them, but still, at the end of the day we could only get 15 new members for the scouts club, and that’s half of our goal. Even though these past 2 days had been saying otherwise, I think there’s still hope, because despite the fact that the new student orientation event is over, we could still recruit new members until the end of July, and I have my own goal to accomplish because a few days ago I just found out one of my cousin started their freshmen year at the same school I go to, although it’s not one of my closest cousins, I could still make him join the scouts, and hopefully made him persuade 2 of his friends to join as well.

That’s all I had to write for this week’s article, because I have been busy with various family vacations because my summer break was taken away from me because of scouts practice everyday, but nevertheless I’ve got an amazing announcement to make; next week I’ll start preparing for the continuation of my Guerilla Street Art project! It’s the last act and the act I’ve been waiting for, so next week is the last “interval” article, so stay tuned and don’t forget to check Artificial Life every Saturday for a new post update, and I’ll see you all next week!
